Passage and Bearing is the third conceptual landscape series by Jason Koster. The location for this series is the Paria Canyon, located 32 miles west of Page, Arizona. Passage and Bearing is considered a sequel to Koster’s Survival Damage series, as Buckskin Gulch ends where it meets Paria Canyon. Passage and Bearing begins just north of the White House Trailhead in Utah and continues 38 miles downstream to the Lonely Dell Ranch at Lee’s Ferry, Arizona. 
To accommodate the similar scenery found on the Buckskin Trail, Passage and Bearing utilizes the same extreme panoramic image-stitching techniques used to compile both horizontal and vertical panoramic scenes. Koster continues to remove the skies in this series to create contrasting graphic-organic environments that exist outside of time, allowing the plants and rocks to express the human-like thoughts and feelings reflected in the image titles. Collectively, these vignettes
along the way tell the greater story of the canyon.
Due to scheduling, weather, and camping permit availability, this series is also a work in progress. This portion of the series covers miles 7 – 27 and the images are not yet titled.
One distinguishing feature of this series is the introduction of the Paria River. Returning to the Land Speak of the John Muir Trail series, Koster used darkened lakes with static water as placeholders for emotion. In Erosion Stories, Koster uses the flowing water of the Paria River as a bright, life force running through the canyon giving and taking away from those in its path.
