About the Artist

Jason Koster’s work is an exploration of humanity’s connection with itself and the natural world. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Koster’s journey into photography started in his early teens. Achieving a BFA in Commercial Photography from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit set the foundation for a technician’s approach to his creative expression. Koster’s career begins in the era of darkroom & film and gracefully transitions into the age of digital technology—a shift that has allowed him to maintain both the tactile sensitivity of traditional photography and the expanded possibilities afforded by modern tools.

In contrast to his commercial training, Koster’s fine art photography relies on an intuitive, organic approach to his subjects. Trusting his firm grasp on photography, his creative process is rooted in instinct. He places himself within an environment and allows himself to be drawn to particular qualities. The resulting images are not merely technical executions but emotional reflections of Koster’s subconscious connection to his surroundings.

His early works, steeped in portraiture, explore the essence of beauty, ego & vulnerability. Over time, his  artistic expression expanded to incorporate the gesture and interpretation of natural elements, such as seedpods, slot canyons and vistas views. In the editing process, Koster pieces together the unspoken narrative that his initial instinct guided him to capture. At the heart of Koster’s practice is a unique theme of humanizing his subjects either by concept or presentation. Through his process the often overlooked aspects
of nature take on a new life in a way that challenges the viewer to reconsider their own relationship with the world around them.

In Koster’s photography, the viewer is encouraged to slow down, take pause and consider the interaction of the world around them, from the smallest seedpod to the endless horizon. Through this body of work, Koster offers us a visual language that speaks to the beauty in both human and natural forms and turning them into timeless meditations on our place within the world.  Today, Koster resides in the Southwestern United States, where the arid desert landscapes continue to inspire his work.
